« L'enjeu est clair : la vérité ou la vie ; l'histoire ou l'art », peut-on lire dès les premières pages des Seconde considération intempestive de Nietzsche. Le vivant, fragile et fuyant, échappe au spectacle objectif de l’histoire. Il en sera ainsi tant que l’on fera de l’histoire une succession de données factuelles plutôt qu’une restitution de la « conscience intime du temps ». Les mots engendrent la linéarité alors que l’expérience du temps est faite de simultanéités et de rebondissements. Les photographies rassemblées au sein de la série of time, lost par Ewa Monika Zebrowski suggèrent que l’histoire, par le truchement de l’image, a le pouvoir de traduire ce mouvement intime du temps.

Le cœur : une photographie composée de silhouettes d’édifices. Elle se distingue par son format plus imposant que les autres. arrival (2010), mot polysémique qui porte en lui le début et la fin d’une aventure, est le titre de cette image saisie à bord d’un bateau se dirigeant vers Venise. Si certaines photographies de of time, lost rappellent les emblèmes de la « Cité des doges », on pense aux fragments de palazzi (palazzo barbaro, 2010) ou aux méandres des canaux (passage, 2010), un flou vaporeux brouille pourtant toute valeur descriptive. On pourrait penser que le détail architectural est d’emblée chargé d’une histoire monumentale liée au lieu dans lequel il se trouve.

Biographie de l’artiste

Ewa Monika Zebrowski a travaillé dans le milieu du cinéma jusqu’en 1997, avant d’entreprendre des études en photographie à l’Université Concordia et à l’UQAM. Intéressée par la littérature et le potentiel narratif des images, elle est l’auteure de plusieurs livres d’artiste faisant partie de collections institutionnelles au Canada et aux États-Unis. Deux Grand Prix LUX gagnés en 2009, récompensant le meilleur livre de photographies (tenuta di ricordi) et le meilleur projet culturel (dresses without history), venaient d’ailleurs souligner sa maîtrise de ce médium. Sa plus récente exposition solo, of time, lost, s’est tenue en 2011 à la galerie Art Mûr, qui la représente à Montréal. Zebrowski vit et travaille à Montréal. http://www.ewazebrowski.com/

“The issue is clear: truth or life; history or art,” writes Nietzsche in the opening pages of his Seconde considération intempestive. The living, fragile and fleeting, are lost from the objective spectacle of history. This will remain so as long as we make history a succession of factual data rather than a return to an “internal time consciousness.” Words engender linearity, whereas the experience of time is formed of simultaneities and twists. The photographs assembled for Ewa Monika Zebrowski’s series of time, lost suggest that history, through the intermediary of the image, has the power to convey internal time consciousness.

The core: a photograph composed of silhouettes of buildings. It stands out from the others due to its larger format. arrival (2010), a polysemous word that bears within itself both the beginning and the end of an adventure, is the title of this image taken on a ship heading toward Venice. Some photographs in of time, lost may be reminiscent of the emblems of Venice; we think of fragments of palazzos (palazzo barbaro, 2010) or the meanders of canals (passage, 2010), although a misty soft focus blurs any descriptive value. We might think that the architectural detail is charged with a monumental history linked to the site where it is found.

Artist Biography

Ewa Monika Zebrowski worked in the film business until 1997, when she began to study photography at Concordia University and UQAM. She is interested in literature and the narrative potential of images and has written a number artist books that are in institutional collections in Canada and the United States. In 2009, she won two Grand Prix Lux awards for best photography book (tenuta di ricordi) and best cultural project (dresses without history). Her most recent solo exhibition, “of time, lost,” took place in 2011 at Galerie Art Mûr, which represents her in Montreal. Zebrowski lives and works in Montreal. http://www.ewazebrowski.com/
