Ces deux œuvres d'Emanuel Licha sont fondées sur un intérêt pour les décors urbains recréés dans des camps d'entraînement policiers ou militaires. Elles s'attachent à montrer le rôle pleinement opératoire de la fiction dans la réalité des conflits et dans la constitution de nos représentations de l'étranger. Mêlant étroitement le réel et la fiction et jouant des ambiguïtés du réel et du fictionnel, ces œuvres viennent souligner la dimension fantasmatique de nos perceptions. Ce à quoi la figure du « touriste du désastre » dans R for Real vient donner un éclairage supplémentaire.

Biographie de l’artiste
Né à Montréal en 1971, Emanuel Licha a d’abord fait des études en géographie urbaine avant de se consacrer aux arts visuels. Son travail, portant sur l’espace public et l’architecture, l’amène à envisager les objets du paysage urbain comme autant d’indices sociaux, historiques et politiques. Ses photographies et vidéos ont été présentées à Bordeaux, à Paris, à Mexico, à Milan et seront exposées à Montréal, à la galerie SBC en mai 2010. Partageant son temps entre Montréal et Paris, Emanuel Licha enseigne à l’École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Paris-La Villette.
These two works by Emanuel Licha are based on his interest in urban settings re-created for police or military training camps. The intention is to reveal the fully operational role of fiction in the reality of conflicts and in the composition of our portrayals of the foreign. Tightly intertwining reality and fiction and playing on the ambiguities of the real and the fictional, these works underline the phantasmal dimension of our perceptions, on which the figure of the “disaster tourist” in R for Real sheds additional light.

Artist Biography
Emanuel Licha was born in Montreal in 1971 and studied urban geography before turning to the visual arts. His work on public space and architecture led him to envisage objects in the urban landscape as social, historical, and political indices. His photographs and videos have been presented in Bordeaux, Paris, Mexico City, and Milan and will be the subject of an exhibition at Galerie SBC in Montreal in May 2010. Licha divides his time between Montreal and Paris and teaches at the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Paris-La Villette.
