La revue Ciel variable a pour objectif la mise en valeur et l’analyse des pratiques les plus marquantes de la photographie artistique contemporaine. La revue s’intéresse tout particulièrement aux pratiques photographiques qui s’inscrivent dans la mouvance de l’art contemporain et qui se caractérisent par une interrogation sur leurs moyens, leur impact et leur positionnement dans l’ensemble de la culture actuelle.
À l’heure d’une remise en question des cloisonnements disciplinaires, les pratiques photographiques contemporaines nous apparaissent riches d’une « hybridité spécifique », à la croisée des sphères artistique, médiatique, personnelle et corporative (publicité et mode notamment), qui participent à la fois d’une tradition et d’une histoire spécifiques au champ photographique, tout en étant partie prenante des enjeux artistiques contemporains. CV Ciel variable vise à souligner, dans cette perspective, la pertinence des travaux photographiques des artistes québécois et canadiens, en les contextualisant en relation avec les pratiques les plus significatives de la scène internationale.
Ciel variable se distingue par la publication de larges corpus d’œuvres, par sa haute qualité d’impression et par le dynamisme de sa mise en page. Chaque numéro regroupe une sélection de travaux axés sur un point de vue thématique, tout en proposant des analyses spécifiques pour chacune des œuvres. Il inclut aussi des chroniques d’actualité sur les expositions, les publications et les développements institutionnels du milieu relié à la photographie. Produite à Montréal, CV Ciel variable est la seule revue de photographie bilingue au pays. Elle est trimestrielle, publie des textes en français et en anglais selon la langue originale de l’auteur, et est imprimée entièrement en couleur.
La revue a été créée sous le nom de Ciel variable, en 1987, avec un mandat axé sur une photographie de type documentaire et social, mise en relation avec des pratiques littéraires. En 1992, la revue prend le nom de CVphoto et élargit son mandat pour se consacrer aux pratiques de la photographie artistique contemporaine. Elle s’ouvre progressivement à la photographie canadienne et internationale et devient bilingue. À partir de 2000, la revue développe une approche thématique plus affirmée, accentue la couverture de la scène canadienne et internationale et s’ouvre plus largement aux pratiques photographiques relevant des arts contemporains. Le retour au nom Ciel variable, en 2004, vient parachever ce cycle de développement et en amorcer un nouveau caractérisé par l’ajout de nouveaux contenus réflétant la dynamique du milieu de la photographie contemporaine, au confluent des arts contemporains, des nouveaux médias et des usages sociaux de la photographie.
CV Ciel variable aims to identify and examine leading practices and movements in contemporary artistic photography. The magazine is particularly interested in photographic practices that share the ground with other contemporary art processes, and engage in reflections on the photographic media, its’ position and its’ impact within present-day, global culture.
As the relevance of the barriers between artistic and other media comes under increasing scrutiny, contemporary photographic practices appear pregnant with a « specific hybridity » - standing as they do at the crossroads of the arts and media, and of the personal and corporate (most notably in the realms of advertising and fashion). This hybridity is rooted both in the tradition and singular history of the photographic field, while concurrently not shying away from contemporary artistic issues. With this in mind, CV Ciel variable aims to highlight the relevance of the photo works of Quebec and Canadian artists, while contextualizing them within broader artistic practices on the international level.
Ciel Variable is notable for its publication of large portfolios of works, exceptional print quality and crisp layout. Each issue explores a selection of works pertaining to one thematic viewpoint, offering detailed analyses for each work, and also features news and analysis of exhibits, publications and institutional developments within the realm of contemporary photography. Produced in Montreal, Ciel Variable is the only bilingual photography magazine in Canada. Published quarterly and in full colour, Ciel Variable prints essays in the author’s preferred language, whether it be English or French.
Originally created in 1987 under the name Ciel variable, the magazine featured documentary and social photography linked to literary practices. In 1992, after taking on the name of CVphoto, the magazine widened its mandate to concentrate chiefly on contemporary artistic photography. Over the ensuing years, it has opened up to Canadian and international photographic practices and become a bilingual publication. From 2000 onward, the magazine adopted its current thematic approach, increased its coverage of the canadian and international arts scenes, and opened itself up to the exploration of contemporary photographic themes. The return to CV’s original name, Ciel variable, in 2004, brings this process of growth full circle and begins another cycle, characterized by the addition of new content reflecting the dynamic nature of contemporary photography, new media, and of the social uses of photography.
