In three recent interrelated works, Bertrand Carrière explores ways of expressing the memories embedded in the landscape at the site of the Dieppe Raid of 1942. The Caux series constitutes a long meditation on the sense of purposelessness and loss embodied by that very landscape. It was preceded by Jubilee, an installation in two parts refered to as “an ephemeral monument” and “a cemetery of images”, in which nine hundred and thirteen photographs were propped up in the stones of the beach to be borne away by the sea and installed on sticks to represent a war cemetery, just beside the chapel. 913, the film, retraces the making of these works while recalling the story of this event.

Dans son récent film 913 (2004), le photographe-cinéaste Bertrand Carrière rend hommage aux 913 soldats canadiens qui périrent lors du désastreux débarquement à Dieppe le 9 août 1942. Il a réalisé des portraits en noir et blanc de 913 jeunes soldats canadiens qu'il a ensuite déposés sur les rochers de la plage de Normandie où la marée haute les a engloutis. Carrière dit de cette installation épique (intitulée Jubilee, le nom de code du débarquement à Dieppe) qu'elle est « un monument éphémère, un cimetière d'images ». Il a par la suite produit la série photographique Caux dont les images constituent une méditation sur l'abandon et la perte presque palpables que dégage le site même : positions maintenant vides des Allemands, digue brisée, restes de bataille moussus, vagues implacables, lumière élégiaque. Offrant un paysage encore désolé, saturé de souvenirs, les photos de la série Caux agissent comme contrepoids à l'immédiateté intense de Jubilee.

Bertrand Carrière's photographic work is characterized by a search for intimacy, availability of the gaze, and a constant capacity to have restive signs emerge into the visible. His works are arranged in serial groups that explore memory and history inscribed in the landscape. His work has been exhibited in Quebec, Canada, and Europe. Born in Ottawa in 1957 and currently living in Longueuil, he is represented in Montreal by Galerie Simon Blais and in Toronto by the Stephen Bulger Gallery, and his works are distributed by the VU Agency in Paris.
